Allen's Hummingbird Nest - Spring 2014

The last picture of the babies, taken moments before they both flew from the nest - 04/17/2014 at 11:30AM

On March 1st, we discovered a hummingbird nest in the potted ficus tree on our patio. Inside were two eggs, each no bigger than a coffee bean. Twenty-five days later, on the morning of the 25th at 9:30 a.m., the first egg hatched. The second followed the next day, the 26th, at 10:30 a.m.

We’ve been captivated by this tiny bird—from the sturdy, deep nest she built to her quiet patience as she incubated her eggs. Now, watching her feed her two little ones, we’re filled with amazement all over again. It’s incredible how she manages everything with that long beak, how she just instinctively knows what to do and when to do it. We’re marveling at nature and loving this close-up view of a tiny mama and her even tinier babies.
